This book was compiled for outdoor educators and the Junior Forest Warden movement mostly from articles originally published in Wilderness Arts and Recreation Magazine that had become out of print but much sought after. Some of the articles were the basis for his book, Bushcraft. A small fraction of the book will seem familiar but the rest makes an excellent complement to his Bushcraft book, while this one is mostly on survival.

What to expect about this book?
Mors Kochanski's "Boreal Survival" is by no means a mere survival book for those only living near the Canadian Boreal Forrest. If you enjoyed his book "Bushcraft" this is part 2 to that book. In this book he goes into great detail helping you have a strong foundation and platform to grow while revisiting some points he talked about in the first book. For example in his book "Bushcraft" in Chapter 1 Firecraft there Mors gives you the reader a layout of different fires you can make, and where to position yourself when using them, as well as what fire arrangement to use for what need. Here in "Boreal Survival" fire ecology and dives into the issues of fire making in far more depth from the composition of wood, to learning what sources are good for use of kindling, to moisture issues, and even fire physiology among other points he makes.
He also spends a lot of time talking about the psychology of wilderness survival and the effects it may have on ones mental and physical state among other points of necessity. This book was specifically designed to compliment his first book "Bushcraft" and to truly shed some important light on the many points of wilderness survival. In the section about Wild Edibles he helps layout for you ways to document, and notate the many plants you will over time encounter while listing some and their uses, to help with positive identification as well as personal documentation. When I think of the time he spent compiling this information together this book alone is sincerely a go to book for learning in depth bushcraft skills you can take from reading to actually doing yourself.
